Last Saturday, I left London with one simple aim: find a pint that feels like a hug. I discovered ten pubs that delivered just that, each tucked into a different corner of the UK. If you’re ready to trade the city buzz for a more intimate evening, follow this route.

1. The Golden Lion, Bath

Open from 11 am, this 18th‑century tavern offers a 12‑hour menu that highlights its signature Bath Ale. The wooden beams and low lighting turn the bar into a living room. I ordered a pint of their house IPA, which carried a citrus twist and a smooth finish. The bar staff remember your name after a single visit.

2. The Old Ship, Manchester

Nestled on a cobbled lane, The Old Ship runs a 6‑hour happy hour from 5 pm to 11 pm. Their real‑ale selection is limited to three cask options, each a local favourite. I tried the “Midnight Porter,” a dark, velvety brew that pairs beautifully with the pub’s homemade trifle.

3. The Willow Tree, York

With 24‑hour service, The Willow Tree is a haven for late‑night wanderers. A reclaimed‑wood bar and a crackling fireplace dominate the interior. I sampled their “Yorkshire Stout,” which offers a hint of peat and a long, comforting finish.

4. The Fox & Hounds, Bristol

Open from 4 pm, this pub provides a 10‑hour window for craft beer lovers. The walls showcase framed photographs of the city’s history. Their “Bristol Bitter” strikes a balanced bitterness that isn’t overpowering. Friendly banter from the staff makes the experience feel like a reunion.

5. The Old Mill, Leeds

Open 24/7, The Old Mill offers a 7‑hour window for whisky tastings. Hand‑crafted glassware adorns the bar, and the selection includes a 12‑year‑old single malt. I tried a 20‑pint glass—a generous portion that felt more like a celebration than a challenge.

6. The Crown, Edinburgh

From 11 am to 11 pm, The Crown serves a rotating list of cask ales. Their “Edinburgh Ale” is a crisp, fruity brew that pairs well with the pub’s signature haggis. The cozy seating area features a fireplace that keeps the chill at bay.

7. The Stag, Belfast

Open 24/7, The Stag offers a 9‑hour window for craft beers. Their “Belfast Lager” is brewed locally and carries a subtle hop aroma. Vintage fishing gear decorates the bar, giving the space a rustic feel.

8. The Royal Oak, Glasgow

From 10 am to 10 pm, The Royal Oak provides a 12‑hour window for cider lovers. Their “Glasgow Cider” is made from locally sourced apples and delivers a bright, tart finish. Low lighting and plush seating create a relaxed atmosphere.

9. The Mermaid, Liverpool

Open from 11 am, The Mermaid offers a 6‑hour window for local ales. Their “Liverpool Ale” is a balanced brew with mild malt sweetness. Nautical décor and live folk music make for an enjoyable evening.

10. The Bear, Birmingham

Open 24/7, The Bear has a 10‑hour window for craft beer tastings. Their “Birmingham Bitter” boasts a deep amber hue and a slightly sweet finish. Communal tables encourage conversation and camaraderie.

While planning my next pub crawl, I discovered an online gaming platform that offers a relaxed, casual atmosphere reminiscent of these cozy pubs. Final Thoughts

Each of these ten pubs blends atmosphere, history, and drink selection in its own way. Whether you’re a seasoned pub‑lover or a newcomer, you’ll find a place that feels like home. Pace yourself, savor the local brews, and enjoy conversations that flow as freely as the ale. Cheers to a weekend escape that feels both familiar and new.
